In the “Spirit of Freedom” marching band season so far, there have been many unexpected events that occurred. During one of the first games, the game got paused because of a rain and a lighting warning. Many people ended up leaving before the game continued and the marching band ended up leaving when the rain started as well. Some people in the band had mixed feelings about having to leave mid-game. Some competitions were also canceled because of the storms.
“I mean it’s pretty demoralizing to be honest, because you know, you’re really looking forward to showing the people you know and you’re close with that music,” said Matthew Eisen, drum set. “That being said, as long as I get to perform music for anybody, it makes me really happy.”
Others also had different opinions on the events that occurred in the beginning of the season.
“Playing in the auditorium was met with a lot of mixed opinions,” said Devin Chin, auxiliary percussion. “Although, I think it was a good thing because we were able to practice more to yield better results in our next performances. If we were to play on the field that day I don’t think it would have been as good as it is now.”
Aside from the negatives the band season started with, there were also some good things that happened this season. For example, Tag Day where band students went around the community to raise money.
“Despite the hate that Tag Day gets, I personally had a great time getting to know my band mates a little better,” Chin said. “Something about asking for money with friends from the local community builds camaraderie. My group raised over $500!”
It seems that although the season started off rocky, it has been getting better as time is progressing. The Freedom community waits for what the “Spirit of Freedom” marching band has to offer for the rest of the year!
