It can be a struggle for many athletes when a new coach comes in with a different style and plan than their previous coach. This year there is a new varsity football coach and with this there is a new approach.
“Coach Mayo has helped me out tremendously over this past year,” said senior Abdullah Sabri.
In previous years there have been more running plays for the offense. This year is different.
“[Coach Mayo] allows us to pass more often and set up the run,” Sabri said.
So far the football season has been off to a slow start, with four straight losses to start the season, but they are currently in the midst of a two game winning streak. This year’s homecoming game on Oct. 6, ended in a 63-14 win over Osbourn. However, this success has not been consistent enough this year, something the team would like to change.
Although many people would like to see immediate improvement this is not always realistic. The new coach will need time to build the culture and produce the outcomes everyone would like to see. There have been some bright spots this season, with the defense completing a shutout against Osbourn Park and holding Osbourn to only 14 points.
The season is now over and the football team finished with a three and seven record. The players are hopeful that next season will be better due to Coach Mayo’s presence, and because the drills he has created are “Helping me get better everyday” Sabri said.
