At the end of every year, after seniors go off to Capstone, many juniors are inclined to ask their friends doing Capstone for their parking pass. Juniors are not usually allowed to park in the student parking lot due to the sheer amount of seniors that have parking passes.
Even with the big parking lot, there are many seniors that park on the street, indicating just how much of a privilege it is to park in the student parking lot. However, many seniors give their parking passes to juniors since they have no need for them while being on Capstone. This has become a recent problem for administrators due to many safety concerns.
There are many steps to obtaining a parking pass with agreeing to a contract and parental permission, which will not be followed by the juniors receiving the parking passes.
“Seniors sign a contract with their parents including several safety rules and LCPS policies regarding the use of the parking lot,” said Kathryn Koscinski, assistant principal. “They can lose their privilege to park if they do not follow these rules.”
In this contract, the students must list the make, model, license and color of their car to help the security team identify which cars belong in the parking lot and which cars do not, also allowing them to identify any possible threats. The school’s administration team also verifies the validity of each student’s driver’s license, ensuring that everyone that wishes to park in the parking lot can actually drive.
The juniors using senior parking passes to park in the student parking lot go against these security measures because the security officers do not have access to these students’ license, model, make or license plate. It is difficult for the security officers to verify the lack of threat when there is a lack of information about parking passes.
