Chilling Adventures of Sabrina TV Show Review

The new series Chilling Adventures of Sabrina was recently released on Netflix, and is an adaption of the hit American sitcom Sabrina the Teenage Witch. The show follows the life of Sabrina Spellman, a role played by Kiernan Shipka. Spellman is a half-witch half-mortal teenage girl attempting to find her place in both the supernatural and ordinary world.

Living with her aunts Hilda and Zelda, roles played by Lucy Davis and Miranda Otto, Spellman is urged to join her coven and devote her life to witchcraft. However, in order to please her family she must leave her boyfriend Harvey, played by Ross Lynch, and best friends Rosalind and Susie, played by Jaz Sinclair and Lachlan Watson, behind. Throughout the series, Spellman fights against evil forces that threaten her while remaining loyal to her friends, and constantly finds herself caught between two worlds.

The show is a dark and twisted take on a classic sitcom, and is a refreshing spin on a coming-of-age story. I really enjoyed that the show was a thriller, something that Sabrina the Teenage Witch was not, and focused on the scarier aspects of Spellman’s life as a witch. The series was able to highlight the lighthearted nature of a young adult TV show while also focusing on horror, making each episode really fun to watch. Chilling Adventures of Sabrina also emphasizes topics that are quite relatable to teenage audiences, such as family drama and boy troubles. The series tends to emphasize the relationship Spellman has with her aunts, which at times was dysfunctional due to their disapproval of Spellman’s attachment to mortals. Spellman also struggles with keeping her supernatural side a secret, leading to problems with her friends as well.

Overall, I really enjoyed watching the series and would recommend it to anyone looking for a young adult TV show with a twist.
